Today I’m Thinking | Blog Post #1

When we are in alignment, things happen that are needed. Sometimes it feels great and other times it sucks, but we can soften and trust that what we are experiencing is happening as it needs to. Let me attempt to explain how I see this in my head.

We plunk down on earth and have to go through this whole awkward transformation from soul to full-on human, right? In the process of our soul waiting for our human growth so we can fully operate here on earth (i.e., start adulting), something happens. The voice of society and other human influences begin to drown out the voice of our Knowing (our soul). We have a path set before us when we show up here, but as our soul’s voice gets obscured, so does our path. Through societal norms, parental misguidance, traumas, poor influences, trained habits and patterns, and heartbreaks, we can easily end up taking a left turn where our path beckoned us to take a right.

For example, perhaps there was a time we were offered a job and our soul said, "This is the one!" We had a moment of hearing the Knowing, which showed up as a little flurry of excitement. The universe had clearly laid out our path to turn right and say “Yes!” to the job. Instead, we paused. And in that moment of hesitant pause a flood of other voices rushed in. We heard society say, “You’re a woman, and this job is out of your league.” “It's in a state you’ve never lived in, and it’s not safe.” Our parent's voices came in, reminding us that they were counting on us to take over the family business so they could retire. Our boyfriend's or girlfriend’s voice chimed in, asking what would become of our relationship if we moved. And then the flurry of emotions we initially felt was no longer the nervous excitement of exploration and possibility (the kind we WANT to follow), but had become a fear of the unknown and of displeasing people (the type of fear we DO NOT want to follow). And so we turned left in the direction of the loudest voices, because our soul and the universe are infinitely patient and will always honor our free will. They don’t argue back or yell louder above the crowd or insist that we take their guidance. They nudge us gently and then fall quiet. Our ability to choose allows us to explore, and that is what we are here to do. We get to learn the hard way, for better or worse. So without much push-back from our Knowing, we take the path of least resistance and turn down the job.

End of story? No way. I genuinely believe that there are infinite chances to correct our course. If we turn left instead of right, it doesn’t mean we have to stay on that path forever, and we don’t have to retrace our steps to get back on track either. Once we move forward in our journey, what’s left behind us falls away. If our purpose is not being realized, the universe sets up a new "right turn" ahead of us. Again, it’s our choice whether we listen to the nudge or allow it to be drowned out. I feel pretty sure, though, that there is NEVER a “too late” or a complete fail. The universe will just create a new opportunity to allow us the possibility for a course correction. No matter how many times we miss it, it will show up again. Not in the same form. There are infinite possibilities in the universe, so every opportunity will look slightly different, but a new door will always open that has the potential of leading us to a path of deeper fulfillment.

Once we move forward in our journey, what’s left behind falls away...there is never a ‘too late’ or a complete fail.

Let's say that after ten years of working in our parents’ business and realizing that it wasn’t bringing us joy, we attend a yoga class to relax our mind, and the student next to us ends up being from the same state we would have moved to had we taken the job we were offered years before. We keep in touch with her for several months. Then, she learns there is a job opening at her workplace and sends us the application. For a moment, we feel the same feelings of excitement we felt a decade ago. The path has opened up again — in a different form — and this time we take it. The voices against are strong, but we allow our trust in our own voice to be stronger. When we listen to and take action on the nudge, this is when I feel that the universe happily meets us and gives us an extra nudge of encouragement to help fend off fear. For example, maybe we post about this new job and upcoming move on our social media, and we get a message from an old college friend saying that she now lives there too. She would love to offer us a free place to stay for a month while we find our own place and get to know people in the area. Coincidences like this, I think, are there to support us because society often does not want us to follow our soul’s nudge to freedom. When we rise in our courage and Knowing, society will flare up with its fear of change. Our parents may be crushed, certain relationships may end, and our friends may try to convince us that we don’t know what we’re doing. It will take a lot of effort and certain loss (because change of any kind comes with loss) if we choose this “right turn” down the better path, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it. Life doesn't promise to be easy. The universe knows this, and so it will send subtle messages that we are on the right track. Just keep going. Keep going. Kindly and bravely. Keep going.

If you currently feel that you’ve wandered down a road that doesn't belong to your soul, please trust that if you encourage your inner guidance to speak up again, your course correction will show up very soon. Listen for the nervous excitement. Listen to your Knowing. It won’t be easy, but it's never too late or too hard to live your life completely aligned and deeply vibrant.
